General Information
What is Public Housing?
A federally funded Low-Rent Public Housing Program that provides quality, affordable rental housing for families, seniors, and persons with disabilities at developments that are owned and managed by the Housing Authority. The agency owns and manages 226 rental units encompassed in 5 housing developments across the city of Mercedes under this program.
Who is Eligible?
Public housing is limited to low-income families and individuals.
An HA determines your eligibility based on:
1) annual gross income;
2) whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family;
3) U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.
If the applicant is found to be eligible for public housing, the public housing agency (PHA) will check the applicants’ references to make sure they will be good tenants. Housing agencies will deny admission to any applicant whose habits and practices may be expected to have a detrimental effect on other tenants or on the project’s environment.
